Cartagena Weddings: Venues, Planners and What to Know Before You Book

Cartagena is Colombia’s destination-wedding capital. The city hosts more than 500 destination and Catholic weddings a year, according to its tourism board, and accounts for about 40% of the country’s destination weddings. Couples come for the colonial walled city, the Caribbean breeze and the islands just offshore.

On this page you’ll find Cartagena wedding venues and planners from the LOVIA directory, the months that work best, how your guests get there, and the legal basics for marrying in Colombia as foreigners.

Why get married in Cartagena

  • A UNESCO World Heritage city. The port, fortresses and monuments of Cartagena have been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 1984. Inside the walls you’ll find plazas, colonial houses with flower-filled balconies and, just outside, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas.
  • Beaches and islands. Bocagrande, Castillogrande, El Laguito and La Boquilla are part of the city, and Tierrabomba, Barú and the Rosario Islands lie offshore.
  • Easy for guests to reach. Rafael Núñez International Airport is inside the city, and it has nonstop flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York (JFK) and Atlanta, among others. Routes change by season, so check current schedules before you send the save-the-dates.
  • Room for a long weekend. More than 40% of guests at foreign weddings in Colombia stay four to six days, according to ProColombia. In Cartagena, that’s easy to fill.

Cartagena wedding venues

Start with the setting, because it shapes everything else:

  • The walled city. Hotels and restaurants in the historic center, where the ceremony, dinner and guest rooms can be close together. Good for couples who want colonial architecture in every photo.
  • Beachfront hotels. Ceremony, reception and lodging in one place, with the sea as a backdrop.
  • The islands. For a beach wedding away from the city. Ask how guests get there and back, and what time the last boat leaves.
  • Event halls and restaurants. Event halls for a large celebration; restaurants for a small wedding or a welcome dinner.

Questions to ask every Cartagena venue:

  1. Is there shade and breeze for an outdoor ceremony, and what’s the covered plan B?
  2. For a ceremony on the sand, which permits does the venue handle and which are on you?
  3. Is there a minimum number of rooms or guests?
  4. What time does the music have to stop?
  5. Can you bring outside vendors, or do you have to use the venue’s own?

Finding a Cartagena wedding planner

A local planner is the person who knows the venues, books the vendors, handles contracts in Spanish and is on the ground while you’re at home. Some Cartagena planners work in English and some only in Spanish, so ask from the first message. Before you hire one, ask:

  • Which language will we work in, and who will be our contact on the wedding day?
  • What’s included: full planning, partial planning or day-of coordination?
  • Who signs contracts with the vendors, and how are payments made?
  • How do you handle rain, wind and permits for the beach or public spaces?
  • How will guests get around? A chiva, the open-air party bus you’ll see around Cartagena, needs to be booked early.

When to get married in Cartagena

It’s hot all year, and the breeze makes it bearable. The rainier months are usually April–May and October–November, with September and October the cloudiest and wettest. November to February are the breeziest months.

Demand matters as much as weather. December is the busiest wedding month in Colombia, and ProColombia lists December, November, March and August as high season for destination weddings. Cartagena also celebrates its Independence festivities around November 11 for four days, so book early if your date falls then. Whatever the month, plan an outdoor ceremony for late afternoon and keep a covered backup.

Think about the whole weekend, too. Many couples add a welcome dinner in the old city, a day on the islands or a farewell brunch, and in high season boats, restaurants and hotel rooms fill up early. Send save-the-dates with the hotel block and transfer details as soon as your venue is confirmed.

Getting legally married in Cartagena

Foreigners can marry in a civil ceremony before a notary (notaría). One Cartagena notary lists these requirements for foreign partners:

  • passport copies;
  • birth certificates issued within the last three months, with a Hague apostille and an official Spanish translation;
  • proof of single status or its equivalent;
  • documents filed at least seven business days before the wedding, plus a public notice (edicto) of five business days;
  • one partner must have lived in Cartagena for the six months before the application, with no exceptions.

Other notaries may ask for different things, so check each one. Requirements can change; confirm with the notary before booking flights.

Because of the residency rule, many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Cartagena. If you’d like a Catholic wedding in one of the old city’s churches, the parish has its own requirements: ask early. For the full document list, see our destination wedding guide.

    Frequently asked questions

    How much does a wedding in Cartagena cost?
    There's no fixed price. Nationwide, ProColombia found that more than 40% of foreign weddings fall between US$20,000 and US$50,000. In Cartagena, the total depends on the date, guest count, venue, catering per person, planner, photography and guest transportation. If you marry at a hotel, ask whether it requires a minimum number of rooms. Compare itemized quotes based on the same details.
    What is the best month for a wedding in Cartagena?
    November to February are the breeziest months, and the rainier periods are usually April–May and October–November, with September and October the wettest. December is the busiest month for weddings, so popular venues book up early. Whatever the month, schedule an outdoor ceremony for late afternoon and have a covered plan B.
    Can we get legally married in Cartagena as foreigners?
    It's possible, but check with the notary first. One Cartagena notary requires that one partner has lived in the city for the six months before applying, plus apostilled and translated documents filed at least seven business days ahead. Requirements can change; confirm with the notary before booking flights. Many couples marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Cartagena.
    Do we need a wedding planner for a Cartagena destination wedding?
    It's not required, but it helps when you're planning from abroad. A local planner knows the venues, books vendors, handles contracts in Spanish and coordinates the day. Ask which language they work in, what's included, how payments work and how they handle rain and permits. You can compare Cartagena planners on LOVIA and request quotes for free.
    Can we have a beach wedding in Cartagena?
    Yes. You can marry at a beachfront hotel in the city or on one of the nearby islands, such as Barú or the Rosario Islands. Ask the venue which permits it handles for a ceremony on the sand, how guests travel to an island and back, and what the plan is if the wind picks up or it rains.
