Bogotá Weddings: Wedding Planners, Haciendas in the Sabana and Practical Tips

Bogotá is Colombia’s main gateway. El Dorado International Airport handles about half of the country’s air traffic, and it has nonstop flights from more than ten U.S. cities, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Newark, Washington, Boston and Chicago. That makes the capital an easy place to gather guests from different cities.

On LOVIA, Bogotá’s strength is its vendors: wedding planners, photographers, caterers, DJs, hair and makeup artists and bridal shops based in the city. For the venue, many couples look just outside the city, to the haciendas of the Sabana.

Why plan a wedding in or near Bogotá

  • Access. Nonstop flights from across the U.S., and domestic connections to the rest of Colombia.
  • A deep bench of vendors. You can hire your planner, photographer and caterer in Bogotá and take them to a venue in the Sabana.
  • Cool, green highlands. The city sits at about 2,600 meters (8,500 feet). Even the warmest month averages about 14 °C (57 °F), so think wool wraps, candles and heated tents rather than beachwear.
  • If you live in Colombia. For couples already living in Bogotá, a civil ceremony at a local notary is often simpler, since some notaries ask that one partner live in the area.

Wedding planners in Bogotá

A Bogotá planner books your venue and vendors, handles contracts in Spanish, organizes guest transportation to the Sabana and works around the city’s traffic. Some planners work in English and some only in Spanish. Ask in your first message which language they’ll use, what’s included (full planning, partial planning or day-of coordination), how payments to vendors work, and how they plan for cold nights and rain.

Bogotá wedding venues: the Sabana and beyond

  • In the city. Event halls, hotels and restaurants, for an urban wedding or a dinner after the civil ceremony.
  • The Sabana. The high plain around Bogotá has haciendas for weddings in towns such as Chía, Cota, Cajicá, Tenjo, Subachoque and El Rosal, close to the capital and with the same cool climate.
  • Warmer weather. Lower towns such as La Mesa (about 24 °C, or 75 °F), Girardot (about 28 °C, or 82 °F) and Fusagasugá offer warm-weather weddings, with a longer drive.
  • Villa de Leyva. A colonial town in Boyacá, north of Bogotá by road, with a cobblestone main square and an average of about 18 °C (64 °F). Best as a wedding weekend, with guests staying in town.

Planning for Bogotá's weather and traffic

  • Cold nights. Ask the venue for an enclosed room or a tent with sides and heaters, and tell guests to bring a coat.
  • Rain. It can rain in any month. Every outdoor ceremony needs a covered plan B.
  • Travel time. Confirm how early vendors need to leave the city because of traffic, and whether they charge a travel fee outside Bogotá.
  • Getting guests home. For a hacienda in the Sabana, book a bus back to the hotels so nobody has to drive at night.

Getting legally married in Bogotá

A Bogotá notary lists these documents for a foreign partner: a certificate of single status and a birth certificate, both apostilled and translated; an official translator if the foreign partner doesn’t speak Spanish; and, if you were married before, the apostilled and translated divorce decree. Both partners appear in person, or one can give a power of attorney. The notary also posts a public notice (edicto) for five business days before the wedding.

Other notaries may ask for more, such as recently issued documents or proof that one partner lives in the area. Requirements can change; confirm with the notary before booking flights. Many couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Colombia. See the full list in our destination wedding guide.

    Frequently asked questions

Where can we get married near Bogotá?
The Sabana, the high plain around the city, has haciendas in towns such as Chía, Cota, Cajicá, Tenjo, Subachoque and El Rosal, all close to the capital and cool like Bogotá. For warmer weather, look at La Mesa, Girardot or Fusagasugá, which are farther away. Villa de Leyva, in Boyacá, works for a colonial wedding weekend.
What is the weather like for a wedding in Bogotá?
Cool. The city is at about 2,600 meters (8,500 feet), and even the warmest month averages around 14 °C (57 °F). Nights are cold and it can rain in any month. Choose an enclosed room or a tent with sides and heaters, keep a covered plan B for the ceremony, and remind guests to bring a coat.
Do wedding planners in Bogotá speak English?
Some Bogotá planners work in English and others only in Spanish. When you message a planner through LOVIA, write in English and ask which language they'll use for meetings, contracts and the wedding day. If you'd rather not handle Spanish at all, fill in our form and our team will help you reach planners for free.
Can we get married at a notary in Bogotá?
Yes. Bring passports, an apostilled and translated birth certificate and proof of single status, plus an official translator if one of you doesn't speak Spanish. If either of you was married before, add the apostilled divorce decree. Some notaries ask that one partner lives in the area. Requirements can change; confirm with the notary before booking flights.
How do guests get to a wedding near Bogotá?
Most fly into El Dorado International Airport, which has nonstop flights from more than ten U.S. cities. From there, haciendas in the Sabana are a drive away, and warm-weather towns or Villa de Leyva take longer. Book a hotel block, share directions early, and arrange a bus back after the party so guests don't drive at night.
